EIG (Europe India Gateway)
Launched in 2010, the Europe India Gateway (EIG) submarine cable system was designed to provide high-capacity, low-latency connectivity between Europe, the Middle East, and India. Spanning over 15,000 km and connecting 12 key landing points, EIG enhances connectivity between Europe, North Africa, and Asia. This advanced cable system provides robust and reliable communication solutions, strengthening Djibouti Telecom’s position as a strategic telecom hub.
The EIG cable system was constructed by a consortium of 16 leading telecommunications carriers, including AT&T, Bharti Airtel, BT, Djibouti Telecom, MTN, Omantel, Saudi Telecom, Telecom Egypt, Verizon, and Vodafone. Originally supplied by TE SubCom and ASN, the system offers 40Gbps transmission technology, with the ability to scale up to 100Gbps to meet growing traffic demands. The total investment in the EIG cable system was approximately US$700 million.
