Navigating Change: Djibouti Telecom’s Path Forward in a Transforming Digital Landscape
Apr 17, 2025
The digital world is changing fast — and Africa is stepping onto the global stage with new urgency. At Djibouti Telecom, we recognise that the telecom industry is undergoing profound transformation — both regionally and globally.
As the national telecom operator of Djibouti and a critical gateway between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, we are embracing change and positioning ourselves to serve the needs of tomorrow’s digital economy.
Our Transformation in Focus
In a recent interview with African Business magazine, our Director General, Mr. Mohamed Assoweh Bouh, shared how we are rethinking our structure, partnerships, and long-term ambitions.
“We are moving from a traditional public enterprise to a strategic, flexible, and competitive operator that is aligned with the demands of both local and international markets.”
Here are a few key takeaways from that conversation:
Investing for the Future: Our investments in terrestrial and submarine infrastructure, data management capacity, and digital services are designed to future-proof our networks and unlock long-term value.
Institutional Reform at the Core: We are transforming the way we operate — with streamlined governance, stronger internal processes, and improved operational agility.
Expanding Our Regional Footprint: Through cross-border fibre links and submarine cable landings, we are cementing Djibouti’s role as a regional telecom hub, connecting the continent to the wider world.
Accelerating Digital Access: From high-speed broadband to improved mobile coverage and data affordability, our infrastructure strategy supports inclusive digital growth for our citizens and businesses.
Strengthening Djibouti’s Position as a Telecom Hub
Our strategic location at the crossroads of three continents gives us a unique responsibility — and opportunity — to serve as a digital bridge for the region. Today, Djibouti is home to three cable landing stations and 10 operational submarine cable systems, making it one of the most interconnected telecom hubs in Africa.
From 2Africa to SEA-ME-WE 6, and AAE-1 to PEACE, these systems are enabling secure, high-capacity data transmission between continents — fuelling everything from cloud services to fintech and AI innovation.
We also continue to work with regional peers to strengthen resilience. For example, our participation in the Horizon Fiber Initiative — a joint project with Ethio Telecom and Sudatel — reflects our belief in the power of collaboration to deliver sustainable, cross-border infrastructure.
Adapting to a Rapidly Changing Industry
As digital adoption accelerates and new technologies emerge, we are adapting on every front. Our priorities include:
Improving service quality and customer experience
Enhancing network resilience through redundancy and diversity
Partnering with content providers and cloud platforms
Enabling new technologies like AI, IoT, and high-performance edge computing
“We are not just keeping pace with change — we are preparing to shape it,” our Director General said during his interview.
