The Europe India Gateway (EIG) submarine cable system has undergone a significant capacity upgrade, adding 24.3Tbps of bandwidth through the deployment of Ciena’s advanced GeoMesh solution, powered by WaveLogic Ai coherent optics. This enhancement brings more flexibility, greater efficiency, and the ability to transport up to 400Gbps per wavelength, meeting the increasing data traffic demands across the EIG’s extensive international network.
The EIG cable system, spanning 15,000km and connecting 12 countries across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, is a key route for businesses and consumers between India, Europe, and Africa. Originally deployed in 2011, the EIG cable system is supported by a consortium of 16 telecommunications carriers, including Djibouti Telecom. This vital infrastructure facilitates vast amounts of data transmission across three continents, contributing to the digital economy of each region.
In 2015, the EIG system was previously upgraded using Ciena’s GeoMesh submarine solution and 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, allowing the system to offer 10G and 100G services seamlessly. This latest 2020 upgrade builds on this foundation, utilizing Ciena’s WaveLogic Ai technology to enhance flexibility, reduce operational costs, and improve the system’s spectral efficiency by 52%.
By adding 24.3Tbps of capacity, the EIG system continues to support the evolving needs of businesses and consumers, ensuring that the network can handle growing traffic demands while delivering improved performance and reliability.
This latest upgrade highlights the EIG cable system’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements, ensuring efficient and reliable data transport for users across three continents. With the support of advanced technologies like WaveLogic Ai, the EIG cable system continues to play a pivotal role in global connectivity.
